Gustave Courbet

Gustave Courbet (1819–1877) was a French painter who led the Realism movement in 19th-century French painting. Committed to depicting only what he could see, he rejected academic convention and idealization. His bold choice of vulgar subjects—rural workers, the poor, peasants—shocked traditional audiences. His independent Pavilion du Réalisme at the 1855 Exposition Universelle asserted artistic autonomy. His bold naturalism influenced Manet, the Impressionists, and modernists.
