Charles Auguste Emile Carolus-Duran

Charles Auguste Émile Durand (1837–1917), known as Carolus-Duran, was a French painter and celebrated art instructor. He was noted for stylish portraits of Third Republic nobility and high society. His teaching academy shaped major artists including John Singer Sargent. He was appointed Director of the French Academy in Rome in 1905.
