Gerard van Honthorst

Gerard Gerrit van Honthorst (1592–1656) was a Dutch Golden Age painter famed for depicting artificially lit nocturnal scenes—earning the Italian nickname Gherardo delle Notti (Gerard of the Nights). After training in Utrecht, he travelled to Rome where he absorbed Caravaggio's tenebrism and dramatic chiaroscuro. He became an influential court portraitist upon returning to the Dutch Republic in 1620, building considerable reputation both domestically and abroad.
