Aristide Maillol

Aristide Maillol (1861–1944) was a French sculptor, painter, printmaker, and tapestry designer who began as a Nabi-affiliated painter before turning, at age forty, to monumental sculpture of the female nude. An eye disease forced him to abandon tapestry weaving, redirecting his career toward bronze sculpture. His serene, classically-inspired figures rejected the emotionalism of Rodin, establishing a sculptural standard that endured through World War II.
