Francois-Auguste Biard

François-Auguste Biard (1799–1882), born in Lyon, was a French painter renowned as a traveling artist-explorer whose adventurous journeys produced ethnographic and anecdotal compositions. Trained in wallpaper design and École des Beaux-Arts, Biard journeyed to Italy, Greece, Egypt, and Malta (1827), then led a Gaimard scientific expedition to Spitsbergen and Lappland (1839) alongside writer Léonie d'Aunet.
