James Gale Tyler

James Gale Tyler (1855-1931) was a prominent American maritime painter born in Oswego, New York. Largely self-taught under marine artist A. Carey Smith, he became renowned for depicting clippers, sloops, coastal scenes, and America's Cup races through annual Newport visits. His impressionistic maritime style emphasized mood and light over literal detail, with signature subtle impasto and depth of color. So successful his work was frequently forged—over 100 fraudulent pieces by 1918. He contributed illustrations to Harper's, Century, and Literary Digest.

Painted by hand. Not printed.

Trained oil painters

Every canvas is painted by hand by a trained oil artist — no prints, no machine finishing. Each piece carries real brushwork, real texture, real layers.

Museum-grade pigment matching

We mix each pigment against high-resolution museum references. The greens of Monet, the gold of Klimt, the blues of Van Gogh — matched, not approximated.

Layered, cured, built to last

Oil paint is built in layers and allowed to dry between them — the way the originals were made. The result is a canvas with depth, weight, and decades of life.
