Jean-Baptiste Greuze

Jean-Baptiste Greuze (1725–1805) was a French painter who pioneered moralizing genre scenes and sentimental intimate portraiture in the late Rococo era. Championed by philosopher Diderot, his domestic dramas depicting peasant families and emotionally charged family moments embodied Enlightenment ideals of virtue and feeling. Enormously popular with French aristocracy and collectors in the 1760s–1770s, he commanded among the highest prices in Europe.
