Merry-Joseph Blondel (1781–1853) was a French history painter of the Neoclassical school trained in the rigorous academic tradition. Winner of the prestigious Prix de Rome in 1803, he executed major commissions for churches and civic institutions throughout his career. His grand historical narratives epitomize Neoclassical ideals.
