Thomas Gainsborough

Thomas Gainsborough (1727–1788) was an English portrait and landscape painter, draughtsman, and printmaker who rivaled Sir Joshua Reynolds as the dominant British artist of the late 18th century. Though he achieved great success with portraiture, he preferred painting landscapes. His fluid brushwork and soft tonalities defined the eighteenth-century British landscape school.
