William Matthew Prior

William Matthew Prior (1806–1873) was an American folk artist renowned for his naïve-style portraits of families and children. Born in Bath, Maine, Prior became one of the nineteenth century's most prolific portrait painters, with approximately 1,500 works attributed to him. Working outside academic traditions, he mastered a flat, linear style characterised by meticulous detail. Notably, Prior painted more African American portraits than any contemporary artist. Master Canvas Art offers 1 hand-painted oil reproduction of William Matthew Prior's work.

Painted by hand. Not printed.

Trained oil painters

Every canvas is painted by hand by a trained oil artist — no prints, no machine finishing. Each piece carries real brushwork, real texture, real layers.

Museum-grade pigment matching

We mix each pigment against high-resolution museum references. The greens of Monet, the gold of Klimt, the blues of Van Gogh — matched, not approximated.

Layered, cured, built to last

Oil paint is built in layers and allowed to dry between them — the way the originals were made. The result is a canvas with depth, weight, and decades of life.
